Ever wondered what a volcano looks like on the inside? This unique volcano tour, takes you literally inside a dormant volcano, through the top crater and to the bottom of its magma chamber, which was once filled with steaming hot lava. Iceland is one of the few places in the world where you can enter a volcano’s magma chamber. The dormant Þríhnúkagígur volcano (yeah, good luck trying to pronounce it!) is a unique natural phenomenon.
This isn’t an overly difficult tour, it’s only a moderate 45-50 minute hike to the volcano crater where we’ll descend 120 meters / 400 ft to the bottom of the crater in an open cable lift.
Following an eruption magma chambers usually collapse, but in Þríhnúkagígur the lava drained out like water from a pipe leaving the volcano’s ‘plumbing system’ empty. The Þríhnúkagígur crater is therefore one few places in the world where you can actually enter a magma chamber.
Inside the volcano, the ground space is equivalent to around three basketball courts, and the centre cavity could easily fit the Statue of Liberty.

Wear proper walking/hiking shoes – it’s about a 2.5 km hike each way. The walk usually takes about 45 minutes.
Wear warm clothes – trainers and jeans is not sufficient.
