Next, we stop at the historic site of Reykholt where a pool dating back to the medieval period is sill preserved unchanged.

The waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss are our third stop on this day. There you can see how the water flows from underneath the lava fields and hear the story about Barnafoss waterfall. Now we leave Borgarfjörður behind and set course towards Snæfellsnes peninsula. We will stop at the unique Gerðuberg basalt columns before we reach our accommodation place. In the evening you will have the opportunity to see the the northern lights from the country hotel.

After breakfast, we drive west from the hotel, along the coastline of Snæfellsnes peninsula. The first stop of the day is at the small fishing village of Arnarstapi, where we walk around the surrounding area. From there we go underground, to the Vatnshellir cave which is located inside the Snæfellsnes National Park. The cave is about 8000 years old lava tube tunnel. This experience is as close you will get to the Jules Verne story, A Journey to the Center of Earth.

Next, we have a stop at Hellnar for lunch before we continue to the beautiful Djúpalónssandur beach. Here we will have a short hike on the pebbles stone beach and explore the remains of the ship wreckage. On the beach, you may also find the lifting stones, where you can test your strength like the fishermen used to do in the old days.

From Djúpalónssandur, we continue our journey around Snæfellsnes peninsula and our next stop is at the famous Mt. Kirkjufell, a favorite spot for many photographers. On our way back to Reykjavík, where you will be spending the night, we will try to spot some northern lights.

Day 3 – The Grand South coast and Northern Lights

In the morning you’ll be picked up from your hotel in Reykajvík area. Thundering waterfalls, endless rolling valleys, beautiful black beaches, extraordinary glaciers and small villages with unique landscapes in between. This is exactly what you can expect as you venture your way down the south coast of Iceland.

On the drive down ring road no. 1, you have the chance to explore two of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. On a clear day, you will have the opportunity to see the two surrounding glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. Continuing on, the drive takes us to the coastal village of Vik where you will find Reynisfjara, the black sand beach, with some fantastic sights such as the picturesque basalt column formations and the famous Reynisdrangar peaks.

Throughout the entire day, you can expect to see breathtaking landscape consisting of vast lava fields, waterfalls, black sands and glacier tongues.

After enjoying the south coast marvels, we’ll head deeper into the countryside to our accommodation place, usually Hotel Skaftafell or similar. Here we will enjoy a relaxing evening and recharge for the upcoming day. During the night you have a chance to see the the northern lights. The countryside, away from the city lights, is perfect for spotting this natural phenomenon.

Overnight: Hotel Skaftafell or similar

Day 4 – Ice Cave and Glacier Lagoon

The last day of the tour is sure to unravel the excitement of glacier exploration on more than one level. We will head off early in the morning to the renown Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon, home of the massive floating icebergs and the location for several blockbuster movies like Batman Begins and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty to name a few.

Next, we head to the ice cave where our certified guides will assure a safe and exciting experience. Ice caves are only found during the wintertime when the glacial rivers retract and the water freezes. New ice caves are formed in different locations each year. Ice Caves give you unparalleled photographic opportunity where you can capture the blue light passing through the glacier ice.

After visiting the ice cave, we start making our way back to Reykjavik. Before we leave this magnificent area behind we will stop at Skaftafell Nature Reserve, a part of Vatnajokull National Park. Surrounded by amazing jagged mountains and glacier-topped peaks, the scenery consists of indistinguishable features making it a definite highlight of the tour. On the drive back, after the night falls, we will make sure to look for the northern lights.
