Northern Lights by boat (with a backup plan)

Winter Daily About 2 hour Reykjavík with pick up optional Very easy

The Northern Lights (also known as Aurora Borealis) are Iceland’s main attraction during the cold winter months. The Auroras are a magnificent phenomenon, and an absolute must-see for every traveler.

This tour starts in The Whale Watching Center, located onboard an old fishing vessel permanently docked at the pier. Once onboard prepare to be amazed by a multimedia light-show, including stunning images, time-lapse footage of the lights and information about the science behind Northern lights.

On the cruise, the boat heads towards Faxafloi bay in search of Aurora Borealis but these are best witnessed under dark, clear skies. The most spectacular Northern lights shows, include a constant change in shape, size and color intensity, although sightings like this are never guaranteed.

However, in cases of non sightings the tour operators offer a complimentary return ticket, thus giving everyone a good possibility of a Northern lights experience.

As well as a complimentary return ticket this tour also offers a backup plan; in case the boat ride has to be cancelled (most likely due to weather) we’ll head indoors to a Northern Lights themed visit at the Whales of Iceland Exhibition. The visit includes a guided tour of the 23 life-sized models of all whale species found around Iceland and our BRAND NEW 25 min. Northern Lights documentary. After the film you have a chance to have a Q&A session with your guide and a complimentary drink of your choice is available at the bar.
