The Kjölur route, with its glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields is like nothing else you have ever experienced. It can be described as a true pearl for all nature lovers. The route is only accessible during the summer, is intimately associated with many legends and mysteries of Icelandic history, the Kjölur area was known for outlaws, thieves , ghosts and evil spirits… This unique road offers amazing natural treasures and breathtaking panoramas.
After visiting Kjölur, we’ll head to Geysir Hot Spring area, the home of the true original geyser and one of Iceland’s most iconic natural attraction. This is where Strokkur Geyser can be seen in action, spouting hot water into the air every few minutes.
From the Geysir Hot Spring area, the trip continues to the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall, where a powerful glacier river rushes down 32 meters and into a narrow canyon.
Next up we’ll make for Langjökull (Long Glacier), which is Iceland’s second largest glacier and is about 50km and 15-20km wide. The ice (at it’s thickest) can be up to 580 deep. This Highland Glacier is a must see for every traveler in Iceland.
We’ll then view Kerlingarfjall (Old Woman’s Mountain) whose name was inspired by an old Icelandic folktale about an elderly troll lady who couldn’t find shelter from the sunlight in good time, and was thus turned into stone. You can get a glimpse of her silhouette carved in a stone pillar that’s about 25 meters high.
Finally we’ll end the tour at Thingvellir National Park the birthplace of the oldest existing parliament in the world. Thingvellir is also where the gigantic tectonic plates of America and Eurasia have separated and pulled a part, and as a result they have created a visible rift through the valley.
