This 12hr Golden Circle Extended tour is for those who like to stray off the beaten path. We’ll of course visit the classic Golden Circle attractions, but will also get to visit Hvalfjörður and the Secret Lagoon geothermal pool, where you can have a relaxing soak after a long trip.
You will experience the unique landscape and impressive history of Thingvellir National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), where the continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates can be clearly seen in the cracks which occur across the region.
We’ll then head to the Geysir and Strokkur Geothermal Area, is a ”hot-spring hot-spot”, where the geyser Strokkur shoots a column of water up to 100 feet into the air every 4-8 minutes, in a thrilling display of mother nature’s force.
Next up is Gullfoss Waterfall is one of Iceland’s most beloved and iconic attractions, where pure glacial water tumbles down the over 100 foot waterfall.
After that we’ll journey on to the Kerið volcanic crater was formed in an eruption over 3,000 years ago. Some believe that it was formed in a vast explosion. The more likely theory is that the volcanic cone collapsed into its own magma chamber after the eruption finished. Kerið is the perfect place to learn more about Icelandic geological history and observe a mind-blowing natural wonder.
On the way back you’ll get to experience Hvalfjörður (Fjord of Whales), which is one of the longest fjords in South Iceland and whose name originates from the numerous whales that can often be spotted there, if you’re lucky. The fjord is a stunning nature view and is bordered by numerous beautiful waterfalls.
And of course we saved the best for last! Our final stop is the (not-so) Secret Lagoon, where we’ll spend some time soaking and relaxing after a long and exciting day. This geothermal gem is not the best kept secret in Iceland anymore and for good reason. The water gets to be about 38-40°C, perfect for sore muscles and tired feet.
