Visit the most popular sites in Iceland; Geysir Geothermal Area, Gullfoss Waterfall and Thingvellir National park.

After pick up in Reykjavik we start the tour by heading for the south coast crossing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that divides the tectonic plates, along a landscape with moss covered lava fields with volcanoes on both sides. In the rift valley between the continental plates we have short stop at Hellisheidavirkjun (Geothermal Power Plant) where we both feel and smell the geothermal power.

Next we visit Kerið, a volcanic crater lake. First it was thought that Kerið was formed by a huge volcanic explosion (as is usual for volcanic craters), however research now tells us this was probably a cone volcano which erupted and emptied its magma reserve. The cone collapsed into the magma chamber and created the crater lake bordered by strongly coloured red volcanic rock.

We make a stop at still another spectacular waterfall, Brúarárfoss (Bruarfoss). We will do some hiking toward one gem hidden in the landscape: the waterfall Brúarárfoss (Bruarfoss). This captivating location is not so easy to find and sometimes not so easy to reach – but for sure worth it. It can only be reached on foot.  Our tour leads us through agricultural and horticultural areas where the geothermal heat is used to heat up greenhouses so that fruits, vegetables and flowers can be grown all year round in Iceland.

Next stop is Geysir Geothermal Area. It is from the Icelandic word “geysir” that the English word “geyser” is derived. The geyser Strokkur bursts into the air every 5-8 minutes while other hot springs in the area are quiet but colorful.

The Icelandic highlands are a world of their own, and a super jeep is the vehicle that can take you there. When was the last time you looked 360°around you and saw no sign of civilization? We’ll go off road on F tracks into the highlands for a while, where you can experience a completely different and rather lunar landscape. We drive through an Icelandic forest up to a desert, we cross lava fields and sand area, and rivers and we end up with very good view to Langjokull glacier. Strange black and white world up there.

Gullfoss Falls cascades down two huge steps 11 and 22 meters into a deep gorge. Finally we reach Thingvellir National Park. Here the settlers founded the first parliament in the world in the year 930-1845, when it moved to Reykjavik. In the drift valley you see how the two tectonic plates, the American and Eurasian drift apart, in average 2.5 cm per year.
