Glymur Waterfall Hiking Tour

May-Sept Tue & Sat About 5-7 hours Your hotel / guesthouse in Reykjavik-optional Moderate Min 10 years old

Explore Iceland’s  deepest canyon and largest waterfall when hiking to Glymur Waterfall, one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets. For those that choose the pick-up service, the tour departs from Reykjavik before driving towards Hvalfjordur, a 30km long fjord surrounded by towering volcanic mountains.

Hvarlfjordur is one of the deepest fjords in Iceland and is known for its beautiful surroundings and important role in WW2 when it was a naval base for the British and American navies.

Once we reach Hvalfjordur, we’ll make our way to a cove at the bottom of the fjord and into an isolated valley where the hike begins. The hike starts with a leisurely walk through fields, before crossing through a cave and over a river to get to the gorge of Botnsa river.

Afterwards, we’ll follow a path that winds upwards along the rim of the canyon, crossing gorges and brooks on the way, before reaching a ledge which allows you to take in Glymur Waterfall in all its glory.

This is an excellent place to take some photos and have lunch. After a quick rest, we’ll continue the hike further upwards to get even closer to the waterfall, before reaching it’s crest to take in some stunning vistas.

This is fun part, just like the locals we’ll take off our hiking boots and put on some sandals to wade across the river under the supervision of a trusty guide. Although the water may be cold, have no worries, it’s only 20-25 cm deep.

Once across the river, get ready to put your hiking boots back on and head back down the river to see this natural wonder from a whole new perspective.
