The Glacier & Volcano Challenge takes you to some of the most iconic places in Iceland. From the highest summits through volatile volcanoes and immense glacier to waterfalls, glacier lagoons and geothermal areas.

We will be hiking on Snæfellsjökull Glacier, hike up to Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, daring the highest summit of Hvannadalsnhúkur and admiring the beautiful surroundings and natural gems of: the Golden Circle, Skaftafell-Vatnajökull National Park and the South Coast highlights including Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss Waterfalls, Reynisfjara and the famous Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon.

We will stay in hostels and enjoy traditional Icelandic cuisine.


Day 1 – Snæfellsjökull Glacier Hike

Our tour starts from Reykjavik from where we go to Snæfellsnes Peninsula with its fascinating landscape of lush fjords, haunting volcanic peaks, dramatic sea cliffs, sweeping golden beaches and crooked crunchy lava flows and crowned by the Snæfellsjökull. Taking the road above Arnarstapi and drive on the top of the pass on Snæfellsnes where we start to hike. This is moderate glacier hike where we walk on sand and lava in the beginning but soon we start walking on snow. Where the glacier begins we supply you with glacier equipment and hike up to the top of the glacier. In the late afternoon we will head to Borgarnes where we will be spending the night in a hostel.

Driving: 3 hrs. / Distance: 7-8 km (4.5-5 mi) / Walking time: 5-7 hrs. /Total Ascent: 760 m (2500′).

Overnight: Hostel in Borgarnes.

Day 2 – Golden Circle, Caving & Waterfalls

Day two we will go to the Golden Circle area, with the famous Geyser Strokkur spouting every 5-10 minutes and the spectacular Gullfoss Waterfall. We  will then visit Thingvellir National Park where you will see the drift between the two continental plates, North American and Eurasian, where you will be able to see the cracks and fissures that have been formed. You can walk between the two continents in Almannagjá, the largest crack. We will also be visiting Gjabakkahellir (a.k.a. Stelpuhellir or “Little Girl’s Cave) lava tube cave in Thingvellir, a 360 m long lava tube. We will then move on to seeing the beautiful waterfalls of the south, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss and we will be spending the night in a hostel in the beautiful surroundings in Skógar.

Day 3 – Eyjafjallajökull Glacier Volcano

On the third day we will hike up to the top of Eyjafjallajokull Volcano. We will see the enormous crater of the volcano eruption in 2010 which affected air traffic worldwide and see the amazing view over South Iceland and places like Westmann Islands, Thorsmork and Hekla Volcano. Glacier equipment such as crampons will be provided by your professional guide. The guide on the tour will safely guide you on your hike up the snow and ice crossing crevasses and cauldrons. At the end of the day we will again be spending the night by the gorgeous waterfall; Skógafoss.

Driving: 40 mins. / Distance: 17 km ( 10.56 mi) / Walking time: 8-10 hrs. / Ascent: ~1666 m (5465´)

Day 4 – Skaftafell, Vatnajökull Glacier & Svartifoss Waterfall

On the fourth day we will recharge our energy while enjoying an easy and relaxing day in the astounding surroundings of Skaftafell. The jewel of Southern Iceland encompasses breathtaking views on mountains and glaciers. In the morning we will walk up to Svartifoss Waterfall, flanked by black basalt columns, and then up to Sjónarnípa where we have a view of Iceland´s highest summit which will be conquered on the next day.

Driving: 2,5 hrs. / Walking time: 2 hrs.

Day 5 – Hvannadalshnjúkar, The highest summit of Iceland

On the fifth day we will challenge the highest summit of Iceland, Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 m), that pokes out from the ice cap Öræfajökull, an offshoot of Vatnajökull. This lofty peak is actually the northwestern edge of an immense 5 km-wide crater- the biggest active volcano in Europe. Although this day promises to be one of the best highlights of the tour, it is both physically and mentally challenging as the total elevation gain is more than 2000 m. Be prepared for very long and taxing day of mountain climbing and ice bridges crossing. We will stay another night in Svinafell and in the evening we will be rewarded with a well-deserved and delicious barbecued lamb meat dinner after a long day of hiking.

Driving: short drive. / Distance: 23 km (14 mi).  / Walking time: 12-14 hrs.  / Ascent: 2000 m (6,500′ )

Day 6 – Jökulsárlón, South Coast & Returning to Reykjavik

On the last day of the Glacier and Volcano Challenge, we have already climbed the most iconic mountains of Iceland, hiked on glaciers and all the while admiring the extreme beauty of the Icelandic nature. In addition to that you will explore one of the best parts of Iceland and its authentic gem of nature, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, experiencing fantastic scenery and (an optional) boat ride among millennial icebergs of all shapes and sizes. On the way back to Reykjavik we will make a few visits to some of the highlights of the South Coast including Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss and the Black Beach at Reynisfjara. Our day will end in Reykjavik at around 6:00 PM.
